ArticlesTHE EAT SMART, THINK SMART SUGGESTED ANTIOXIDANT FORMULA The quick way to benefit from the Eat Smart, Think Smart antioxidant plan is to take an antioxidant nutrient formula. For maximum free-radical protection take this formula two to three times each day with meals. Here are the ingredients (amounts listed are for an entire day): Beta-carotene: 25,000 Ø Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols): 800 Ø Vitamin Ñ (calcium ascorbate): 2 g Ascorbyl palmitate: 100 mg Vitamin B1: 25 mg Vitamin B2: 25 mg Vitamin B3 (niacinamide): 120 mg Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): 250 mg Vitamin B12: 100 meg Folic acid: 800 meg Inositol: 100 mg Zinc citrate: 30 mg Copper (coated gluconate): 2 mg Selenium (selenomethionine and selenate forms): 200 meg L-glutathione: 500 mg L-methionine: 250 mg L-taurine: 250 mg Inositol: 100 mg Coenzyme Q10: 30 mg Persons with Wilson's disease (an inherited condition characterized by excessive copper storage) should not take any nutritional supplement containing copper without first checking with a physician. The suggested antioxidant formula contains the most important antioxidants your brain needs to shield it from free-radical damage. You can obtain substantial antioxidants from vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, but foods alone cannot supply anywhere near the megadoses of antioxidants and vitamins found in the antioxidant formula or similar nutrient-mix products sold in health food stores and by mail order (it's really the only practical way to get all the smart nutrients just listed, see Appendix I for suppliers of these products). Thus, although it's important to enjoy an antioxidant-rich diet, you should also supplement your diet with antioxidants to create a shield against free radicals to prevent brain aging. A number of antioxidant formulations that approximate the formula listed here are sold throughout the United States in health food stores, pharmacies, and by mail-order companies. Two of my favorite formulations are these: Maxi-Life CoQ10 (Twin Laboratories; available in health food stores): one of the best-designed antiaging formulas for maximum free-radical protection; available in capsules or powder. Life Extension Mix (Life Extension Foundation; see Appendix I for mail-order information) contains an extensive complement of antioxidants and exotic nutrient cofactors; available in capsules or powder. You may wish to supplement these antioxidant formulas with additional nutrients, especially calcium (none of the formulas contain the amount recommended by nutrition experts—800 to 1,200 mg per day—to help prevent osteoporosis). If you follow the Eat Smart, Think Smart antioxidant protection plan, outlined in the next section, the antioxidant formulas just mentioned will provide most of the nutrients required to prevent premature brain aging. *23\244\2* |
