ArticlesADAM'S RIB- HOW FAT IS MADE (PART 2) If your husband grew up "pudgy," he will never be as svelte as a male model. Remember, bis fat cells have already been programmed, and it's going to take hard work, love, and patience to beat the clock. Here's the biology lesson his Mom never learned; here's the reason you are now forced to do your stuff to save his life: Some animal bodies are made for storing fat—seals, birds and bears all have periods when they stuff their faces, but they use up the fat they have stored. Birds fly south for the winter; seals prepare for the mating season and need to be able to outrun those s.o.b.'s with the clubs who are after their pelts; bears hibernate; and so forth. Unfortunately, humans do not have these same automatic mechanisms for chucking off stored fat. When people store fat, they just get fatter—and then sicker and then dead. This is the way your body works. If you use fewer calories than you eat, your body stores the excess as fat. If you use as many calories as you eat, your body is in balance (thermodynamic balance, to be technical about it) and your weight will remain constant. If you use more calories than you are actually eating, your body will automatically utilize the fat it has already stored for energy. If you run out of stored reserves, your body starts using more vital stores and then you get sick, sick, sick. *24/243/1* |
